Jungle: the ultimate urban sound

Jungle (or Drum n’ bass) is a music genre that was born in England . It is considered to be a transformed variation of hardcore techno and it as born in the early 90’s.

Jungle is considered to be one of the most complex and intricate variations of the techno genre.

It is mainly based on very fast rhythms, breakbeats and heavy basslines.

Most of the time jungle is completely instrumental, which makes sense, because the power of thr rhythm should be the main focus of any jungle track.

However, jungle also has the influence of other music styles like reggae, dub and many times there mc’s who who participate in jungle tracks performing in a wide diversity of styles, although the most common are hip hop and ragga.

Jungle has had a very dedicated legion of followers since its early development.

The genre’s releases rely more on singles and EPs than full-length album, mainly because this type of music is dance and clubbing oriented, so many versions of a track can me achieved, by the producer or by a dj.

The most popular jungle artists do in fact release full length albums.

This is the case of artists like Goldie ( his debut was in 95 with “Timeless”) and Roni Size ( even won a Mercury Award for the album “New Forms”).

Both these albums had a lot of success in the more mainstream audience and transported the jungle/DnB culture into a whole new level.

Jungle started being mixed with all sorts of musical styles like jazz, trip-hop, experimental music, ambient music and others.
Today, there is still a very vivid jungle underground culture, and it is kept alive by huge amount of monthly releases, the raves, the clubs, the Drum n’ bass parties, and the labels that work with a great spirit of community and work hard for all good artists to have their space in the world of music.
