Rhythm and Blues refers to music performed mostly by African-American artists since the 1930’s that has had the influence of Blues.
This was a term used to replace the previous term “race music”(which was quite offensive); an expression that described all music made by black people.
The “Rhythm and Blues” term started its use in the late 1940’s as a marketing phrase on Billboard magazine.
It was created in a way to describe the music made by African-American artists
that had the influence of jazz and blues, but was much more upbeat and popular. It soon started to be popular also among white people, because of its contagious rhythm and catchy lyrics.
The blues part of the name was given because in the early days of the genre (during WWII), the lyrics and the melody were actually a bit sad. Over the years, it was reduced to R&B, for better convenience.
The 60’s saw a big burst of R&B music in the charts, whether it was Motown music, soul or even a much more happier form of blues.. in the 1970’s new genres emerged like neo-soul, funk and disco, but they were all considered part of one big genre called R&B.
Nowadays, I think funk and soul are considered music styles of their own and R&B has drifted into a different path. It is still predominantly performed by African-American artists but it’s musical boundaries are cessing to exist. R&B to day is an amalgamation of styles. It is mostly urban music that mixes hip hop with rap, soul, funk, pop music, dance music and even reggae.
R&B is a completely chart oriented music genre, and most of the R&B we see on television shows people a glamorous world of hot semi naked girls, designer clothing, excessive bling, million dollar cars and provocative dances and lyrics.
Examples of worldwide famous contemporary R&B artists are: Beyoncé, Usher, Brandy, R Kelly and many others.
Making R&B music, producing R&B tracks could be your passport to fame and richness. If you have talent and decide to put enough effort, you can even get a good record deal and launch yourself into the highly competitive music industry.
