Capturing images without the need for film is the greatest advantage of the digital camera. Other than the limitations on battery size, this type of camera can be very small in comparison to its film cousin. As the captured pictures are stored in digital form, almost every computer and other electronic viewing and printing device can read them too. Unlike film where the image is captured on light sensitive film, these store the images as pixels that convert to computer bytes.
These cameras still use lenses in much the same way that conventional cameras do. The only difference between a digital camera and film cameras is how they capture this light inside the camera itself. There are two methods of achieving this; one is more expensive than the other and called a CCD or charge coupled device. Some people believe the device used to capture an image in cheaper cameras the CMOS will eventually be the replacement for the better CCD but this is highly doubtful. CCD’s are much more costly to produce than the CMOS devices, but by using the latter it has brought the cost of many models down considerably. Look for models with over 6 megapixels and you won’t go far wrong as they will provide decent images; if you are lucky you may find a model that is discounted because a new version is about to be introduced.
Unless your budget just won’t stretch that far, don’t buy a digital camera with only a digital zoom or you will find pictures that aren’t very clear when you print them; portrait shots that require ‘framing’ are so much easier with a an zoom facility. Most models these days can accept a storage card to accept more images because high megapixel models use up a great deal of memory. Although larger storage cards have plummeted in price, a 1GB card should be enough for most peoples needs; some cameras won’t accept very high capacity cards anyway.
Cameras are now very tiny compared to a few years ago so you can actually carry around a high specification variant in your pocket and still be able to take fantastic pictures. Why carry around something that is going to make you neck ache when it is not necessary; unless you are a professional photographer of course.
