The Himalayas are a series of mountain ranges ranges in Asia. These magnificent mountain ranges ranges separate the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau and actually span across six countries including, Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They are also the source of three of the world’s most major river systems including the Indus, the Ganga-Brahmaputra and the Yangtze.
The Himalayas can be traced to the Arakans and the Arunachal in the east but Bhutan and Sikkim is where you will really see beauty. Kanchenjunga is measured at more than 28,000 feet and overshadows everything else in Sikkim. The mountain ranges is considered to be sacred by Hindus and Buddhists alike and its name means “Treasure of Five Jewels”. It is also the third highest mountain ranges in the entire world. Sikkim is located to the south of Tibet and east of Nepal.
Nepal is the most popularly visited area in the Himalayas. Here is where you will find the famous Mt. Everest. In fact, eight out of the world’s ten highest mountain ranges are located in the Nepal region. Wildlife safaris, river rafting experiences and Trekking are all popular pastimes in Nepal. Millions of people around the world visit this area each year in order to see the beautiful mountain ranges ranges and participate in the many various activities that are possible here.
The lovely valley of Kashmir is also a popular destination for many travelers. Beautiful landscaped gardens such as the Nishat and the Shalimar are located in this breathtakingly lovely area. Jehangir, the Grand Moghul, enjoyed Kashmir during his time and often escaped to the area to find cooling relief from the blistering summer heat of the plains.
Uttaranchal is a lovely section of the Himalayas as well. Its boundaries are marked by the Kali River on the east side and the Sutlaj River on the west. One-third of the land in Uttaranchal is barren rocks, ridges and wild gorges. Many people head to Uttaranchal for himalaya trekking, a sport that combines mountain ranges climbing and hiking, in order to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the peacefulness that this region offers.
Bhutan is referred to as the “Land of the Thunder Dragon”. This is the second Himalayan Kingdom and offers a very exclusive tourism destination. The countryside has remained virtually unspoiled by modernism. Majestic mountain rangess offer a wonderful mystery and the unique cultural heritage of this area has remained in tact throughout the centuries.
Tibet is also a wonderful and popular destination location. The word Tibet actually translates to “Roof of the World”. The Himalayan range consists of more than 15,000 glaciers which themselves store approximately 12,000 km of freshwater. The Siachen Glacier located at the border between India and Pakistan is the second longest glacier in the entire world. The higher regions of the Himalayas are snowbound throughout most of the year as well.
