Hows Your Home Theatre?
Thursday, March 27th, 2008Just like most things in life having a home theatre all depends on the individuals budget. For the basics on home theatre remember you are trying to…..not necessarily to duplicate the sound that you hear in movie theatres but rather on getting the best experience you can get on your budget. Of course all the better if you are not on a budget.
First off you should have your room all picked out for the future home theatre. Your size and shape of that room might determine the size and layout of your system. The biggest TV might not always be best, only you can decide. Your basic display should be your TV viewing area straight in front of you about 8′ to 10′ away from the TV with your two main speakers on either side pointing towards the viewers. If you have approx 120 sg.ft or less a large TV is not really necessary,a 37″ or even a 32″ might be sufficient.
You also have to decide if the TV will sit on the floor or if you can mount it on the wall. There are various wall mounts available that might suit your needs, but also another expense. Just as TV stands are also usually extra. Even factor in whether you are going to purchase a projector over the HDTV.
With the projector having to be mounted on the ceiling at more of a straight on view to the screen which is mounted on a wall that is usually 12′ to 15′ away is another option to consider.
Even if one of those new HDTV’S are not in your budget you can still have a better movie experience with the use of only four speakers, a good subwoofer and a good receiver. As long as your receiver has the proper connections for four external speakers and a subwoofer input you can create a good sound.
If you are looking to gradually build your system you should invest in a good receiver and speakers first. It also depends on how much of a TV buff you are. If you are a avid TV watcher then maybe your first purchase should be a new HDTV. Either way be prepared to spend minimum of $1200. With receivers starting at around $500 and you can usually find a speaker package of around $600 just make sure you know what you are getting.
If you are just going to buy the HDTV first, you can find something for around $1000. Prices for HDTV’S have seemed to come down over the last year.
Your objective is to have two main speakers, one center channel speaker, one subwoofer, two rear channel speakers and of course your receiver. Even the center channel speaker is not necessary at this point as you have the speakers in your TV.
Although some of the smaller speaker packages can produce a good sound larger floor speakers for the two mains just sounds so much better. It really is the speakers that make the difference so if your budget allows you, don’t go cheap.
There are also some good deals on home theatre packages that would include the HDTV. Depending on the size of the TV minimum would be $2000 plus your taxes of course. Remmeber when buying any HDTV you must have an HD source also, such as a satellite system or an cable box from your cable company. Plus a HDMI cable that goes from your HDTV to your HDTV receiver.
This article is on some of the basics needed and what your budget allows to purchase for your home theatre. Remember you might even have some of the components already that can be added or changed at a later date.Just take a bit of time and planning to get you started and build from that.
